Its a nice gate. Had a little trouble at first. Our home is older so we had to buy special screws for the gate. (Posted on 3/25/2014)
No Instructions included! Review by No Instructions Included

I had two issues with this gate when i received it. One, I there are no instructions included in with the product! I was pretty shocked about this. I went online to print out instructions from another website. My second issue was that my stairs were too wide so I had to order an extension which has not arrived yet. This was my fault as I did not measure the width before choosing the product. So far, this gate has cost me $70! I think this is a bit steep when i was expecting to pay only $39 for the gate. Returning it will cost me another $7+ so i am still debating what i should do. I already ordered another wooden gate online to see if that would work as well, if so, i will return this one. Solid and sturdy Review by Jerry Lindvall

The coated steel components of the gate give you a good sense of security with this product. There are not an overwhelming number of parts to assemble and the photos in the assembly manual coordinate with the numbered steps in the instruction text. Wish all manuals were so easy to read. I made a wood collar for the banister post so screws would not damage the finished wood. It works well and matches the spindles on the stair rail. (Posted on 11/8/2011)
Good Choice Review by JP

As other reviews have said, it does take some time for installation but all in all it was rather easy to complete. I would strongly recommend new (longer) screws for installation (and drywall anchors if not screwing directly into wood). Overall, a simple, effective and safe option for the top of the stairs. Sturdy & Secure; Installation Tricky Review by Salome Blakeslee
Value
Since installing the product at the top and bottom of the staircase, I have found the gates to be sturdy, secure, and easy to open and close with one hand.

It was a bit tricky to install, considering the banisters and bottom stair support. However, my husband is quite handy so the install went well. Just food for thought for those who aren't mechanically inclinded. (Posted on 10/19/2009)
Gate Review Review by Doug

It is just what I wanted. It is strong, sturdy, fixed onto the wall not expanded pressure type. I wanted something super strong that did not push out to hold itself on. (Posted on 5/21/2009)
Great gate Review by 2nd Time Mom

We have this gate at the bottom of our stairs to keep our avid climber downstairs. It is very securely mounted. The install looked easy enough (I watched). The latch is easy to operate, but you do have to remember to close it after you. It makes a quiet "click" when closed. No way my daughter can open it. This gate is much better than other hardware mounted gates we've purchased. (The angle mount version of this same gate has quieter hardware and is virtually silent if that's what you're looking for.) All in all, great gate!! (Posted on 4/25/2009)
The Best of the Best Review by Lynne, Rochester, NY

I can only echo many of the things said by others here. This is an excellent gate. One comment for the woman who pops the gate off its hinges - You FORGOT to install the retaining caps at the top of the hinges! Why blame the product for your inability to follow directions? This gate locks in at all 4 corners and will withstand anything a child can dish out. It easily opens with one hand for all but the inept. The width range made it an easy fit for my extra wide staircase. It is very sturdy across all widths. I love it so much I'm keeping it for the presently non-existent grand kids. OK, I have at least 10 years to wait. (Posted on 1/1/2004)
Very Pleased so Far Review by V.S., USA

I too am very pleased with this gate. Over the past week I installed one each at the top of our two staircases. I strongly recommend following the advice of one of the other reviewers to skip using the template. The lower fixture on the hinge side is lowest to the ground, so I installed that first, then held it in place to mark the spot for the upper hinge. After that was on, I put the gate on the hinges, held it in place and marked the opposite side. Worked great, and it allowed me to work around the mouldings, which would have been difficult with the template. The wood screws held great in the one bannister on one staircase. On the other staircase, I had to put the gates into drywall. There was a beam on one side, so I had to buy much longer screws to ensure a tight grip. The other side was hollow, so I bought some good metal anchors, so the gate is on very tight. All I did was bring the fixtures to the hardware store and found screws and anchors that would fit the holes. Cost me about $10 to get enough anchors and screws for four gates. Most of the poor reviews sound like there are some hardware issues. I take one star away because I think the gate should come with alternate screws, and maybe anchors, because I think it's a bad assumption that most people are installing into wood. I would very much recommend this gate, but advise paying close attention to what you're installing into first and make sure you've got the right hardware. (Posted on 1/1/2004)
Best gate on the market for staircases!!!!!! Review by Laura, Chicago, IL

I can't express just how much I love this gate! I searched high and low to find a suitable gate for the top of my staircase and after trying several gates I purchased the Safeway Gate from kidco...and couldn't be more thrilled with my decision! There are not many gates on the market designed for a wall to banister mount, I thought the only choice I had was a presure mount gate but, after my son took a spill I decided there must be something better. The Safeway gate was so easy to install! Granted, I needed to buy a installation kit so the gate would mount to the banister. But, to my delight there was no need to drill holes into the banister, it mounted securily with plastic tie straps. I could seriously put all my weight against the gate without it budging! I know some people have expressed that the gate is not easy to open but I would disagree, I can easily open it with one hand. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with other gates! This is the only one you need to buy! (Posted on 1/1/2004)
great gate Review by D.M., USA

This gate will work great at the top of the stairs. I listened to the advice of others and started to use the template only for the hinged side, but I actually just installed the upper hinge and then held the gate on that upper hinge and marked the holes for the lower hinge, not even using the template. (If I had used the template, the upper gate hinge post wouldn't sit all the way down once the lower hinge was in place). Once both hinges were installed, I did the same on the locking side - did one latch, placed the gate in position and marked the other latch. this ensured correct positioning and it works great. The two problems with this gate is the templates aren't accurate and you can't use the screws that come with it. Buy #6 wood screws that are longer and use anchors if needed. This seems obvious, but other posts say the gate came out of the wall which is not going to happen with my gate. Also, someone mentioned the spring comes loose and someone else states its too hard to open/close and too loud. They had to have installed it wrong because mine does neither of these. If that spring comes loose, its nowhere near installed correctly. Just wanted to give this great gate some good feedback since I believe 80% of the bad remarks are from poor installation.
