We did put ours at the top of the stairs. Just be aware of any hand railings or molding that may be difficult to mount the gate on/under. We really did like these gates, but my one complaint is that the hinge hardware was plastic, not metal. The plastic hinge brackets wore out after a about 6 months. However, my older kids are not the most gentle, but if you have little kids I would not be concerned.

can this wall mounted gate be converted to a pressure mount?

No it is attached to the wall and no way to use as a pressure gate, but this is a great gate, it can swing in either direction. It keeps kids (and some adults) from getting through.

Yes, the gate itself is very sturdy and heavy. After a year of my 2 children hanging on it and jumping on it, the plastic bracket on the bottom did break, but other than that, the gate is great.

I am using mine for a 20 lb dog. It is well built but it might not stand up to a large dog jumping against it - I wouldn't count on any baby gate standing up to that.
