I called the manufacturer and YES this absolutely needs a waterproof mattress cover! The organic cotton layer at the top only repels liquid for about 5 minutes before it soaks in. There is a think layer of polyurethane
on the back side of the organic cotton cover that prevents liquid from getting into the rest of the mattress but you will still need a cover to protect the top cotton layer.....because how many times do we catch babies leaks in 5 minutes? :)
